Career Profile:

Professor Tony Ryan is a Consultant Neonatologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital, HSE and an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at University College Cork. He was one of the first graduates of the Masters in Teaching & Higher Education at UCC. Awards include the Presidents Award for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (2002) and an Irish Health Award (2009) for International Development and Health Systems improvement (Omdurman Maternity Hospital, Sudan). in 2012, he was awarded a National Award by the National Academy for the Integretion of Research in teaching and learning (NAIRTL).

Research interests:

Basic Sciences: Examining new methods of high frequency ventilation effects of MgSO4 on hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension in piglets.

Clinical Practices: Studies on neonatal Abstinence Syndrome; pulse oximetry ; continuous positive airway pressure in apnea of prematurity1; neonatal pneumothoraces; the effects of PaCO2 and peritoneal dialysis on central hemodynamics in children following open heart surgery; home nebulizers in childhood asthma; thrombolysis; various case reports.   ECMO and congenital diaphragmatic hernias; nitric oxide. Injury Prevention: An investigation of childhood deaths from toy balloons and deaths from children’s’ drawstrings, drownings among people with epilepsy and a study looking at the epidemiology of pediatric burns in the Firefighters Burn Unit at the University of Alberta  Hospitals.
