Gerald Fitzgerald – Deputy Director
Gerald holds a BSc and PhD in Microbiology from UCC and he subsequently spent two years as a postdoctoral scientist at the University on Michigan. Upon his return to the Department of Microbiology at UCC, he developed a research programme on fundamental and applied aspects of the industrially important lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. He holds the Chair of Food Microbiology at UCC, is Deputy Director of the APC, a Principal Investigator in the Infectious Disease core and foundation CEO of Food for Health Ireland (www.fhi.ie). He was awarded the DSc Degree in 2006 by the National University of Ireland for his published work.
