The Challenge - Making Science Understandable to All 20th March 2013
Communicating scientific research in an easily understandable manner to a lay audience is the aim of Science for All, the UCC postgraduate student public presentation competition, the final of which will take place at UCC on Wednesday, March 20th 2013. All are welcome to attend.
This year’s Science for All competition, includes presentations on “mining” the genes of gut bacteria, understanding leukemia, wastewater treatment using willow trees, abdominal pain in Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the impact of dietary fat on gut bacteria and obesity.
The finalists are:

- Maura Hannon, Dept. Biochemistry, UCC
- Fergus McAuliffe, School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences, UCC
- Rachel Moloney, Dept Psychiatry, UCC & APC
- Elaine Patterson, Dept Microbiology, UCC & Teagasc Moorepark Food Research Centre.
The panel of judges for the Final will be chaired by Ms Anne Marie O’Sullivan, H+A Marketing+PR and also includes Mr John Dolan, Features Editor, Evening Echo, Mr Trevor Holmes, Vice President for External Relations, UCC and Dr Julie O’Donovan, Cork Maths Centre and winner Science for All and Science Speak (2009).
The Final will take place in UCC in Lecture theatre Boole 4 at 7pm on Wednesday 20th March. Admission is free and all are welcome.
The competition, now in its 9th year, is organised jointly by the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science and the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, UCC and forms part of a postgraduate module in Science Communication and Outreach (PG6014).
Fergus McAuliffe School BEES was declared the Winner of Science for All 2013.
