– Communication and Outreach Manager
Catherine has BSc and PhD degrees in Biochemistry from University College Cork. She performed postdoctoral research at the Genetics Department,Trinity College and Microbiology Department, UCC. She lectured in UCC’s Biochemistry Department before completing a HDip in Education at UCC. She was Scientific Administrator of the National Food Biotechnology Centre before joining the APC as Education and Outreach Manager.
Catherine has managed the APC’s innovative and imaginative education and public engagement programme since its inception more than 16 years ago and is responsible for all communication activities of the institute, including websites, social media, press releases, liaising with journalists, TV and radio producers.
Catherine is committed to developing scientists’ communication skills. She organised the UCC Science for All competition jointly with UCC College of Science Engineering & Food Science and which resulted in a postgraduate module on Science Communication and Outreach, since 2004. She has been involved with the Cork heats of Famelab in recent years and in the past was a partner in Debating Science Issues and Thesis in 3 competitions. She and Marc McCarthy developed Alimentary Adventures, a unique exciting inflatable walkthrough tunnel that mimics the digestive system which has appeared at science and other festivals around Ireland internationally.
