Michael Molloy – Investigator

Michael Molloy is Consultant Rheumatologist, Cork University Hospital, and Chief Medical Officer to the International Rugby Board (IRB). He qualified at Galway University in Medicine and did his postgraduate training at the Royal London Hospital and Kings College Hospital, London. His interest in Sports Medicine started when he was working in London and playing rugby with London Irish and Ireland. He set up the Sports Injury Clinic at the London Hospital and on returning to Ireland in 1979, he took up his post of Consultant Physician/Rheumatologist and became Medical Officer for the Irish Rugby Team until his appointment as Chief Medical Officer of the International Board in 2005. He was the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and is the Course Director of the Master of MMedSc Sport and Exercise Medicine at Cork University Medical School. He has carried out research in all major rugby competitions for the International Rugby Board and has been involved in collaborative research with other major federations on concussion and spinal cord injuries in sport. His research interests include the genetics of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosi, the GI microbiota in elite professional athletes and the interplay between diet, GI microbiota and stress in professional athletes.
