APC Events for World Microbiome Day 2021
World Microbiome Day (WMD) takes place annually on June 27th, organised by APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre in collaboration with The European Food Information Council (EUFIC). The 2021 theme is Sustainability.
This year’s APC Events:
- Webinar: How the microbiome and diet influence immunity – Prof Liam O’Mahony.
- Online Children’s book reading: There’s a Zoo in my Poo – Felice Jacka & Rob Craw
- Online cooking demonstration: Microbiome Friendly Brunch by Darina Allen in discussion with John Leech, an APC PhD student and MASTER research officer based in Teagasc
- Ask the Experts Online panel for the general public to learn more about the WMD 2021 theme Sustainability and Microbiomes.

Event: Microbiome Friendly Brunch with Darina Allen

This year’s highlight is a virtual ‘Microbiome Friendly Brunch’ cooking demonstration by Darina Allen who will discuss the benefits of the ingredients to the microbiome with John Leech, an APC PhD student and MASTER research officer based in Teagasc.
Darina Allen’s very special online cookery demonstration will cover the following dishes – Water Kefir and Milk Kefir, Yoghurt- Labneh, Honey, Almonds, Porridge, Shakshuka with Sourdough, Granola and Pan Grilled Mackerel Miso. The cookery demonstration will launch at 11am on World Microbiome Day and be available on demand afterwards. Darina and John will discuss how the various ingredients benefit the microbiome as the cookery demonstration progresses. They will also discuss sustainability – the theme for World Microbiome Day 2021 – and a subject which is high on the agenda for Darina Allen and Ballymaloe Cookery School.
Event: Ask the Expert – Sustainability and Microbiomes

Sustainability is the 2021 WMD theme and on Monday 28th June a panel of experts from the APC team are running an Ask the Expert event to answer questions from anyone interested in sustainability and microbiomes.

Competitions are an annual draw for World Microbiome Day.
This year there are two drawing competitions – for ages 5 – 9 and 10 – 14 with prizes of microbiome themed books – The Gut Garden by Katie Brosnan and The Gut Stuff by Lisa and Alana MacFarlane.
For older Microbiome enthusiasts there is a competition for “Showcasing your Food Microbe Hobby” with a chance to win an ASUS 14” Windows 10 Laptop. This is for the gardeners, sourdough bakers, brewers, home composters, mushroom collectors and growers and anybody else who has a hobby where microbes are an essential part of it!
